Greener by design™
At Thermo Fisher Scientific, we leverage the power of innovation to deliver solutions that support our customers in achieving their environmental sustainability objectives without compromising business or scientific priorities.
Offering more sustainable solutions
The global transition to a low-carbon economy is driving customers to set science-based targets and seek suppliers who share their mindset and can offer solutions to advance carbon and circularity goals.
Our portfolio of Greener by design™ solutions includes:

Lower-carbon plastics
Solutions to reduce the environmental impact of plastics without sacrificing performance or quality such as our biobased Sustain Series products made from second-generation biobased feedstocks

More efficient equipment
Solutions with energy efficiency features and superior energy and refrigerant performance, such as our lab centrifuges with GreenCoolTM Technology

Greener services
Services that enable customers to address their environmental impact across clinical research, lab operations and biopharmaceutical manufacturing, such as:
- Our Clinical Trial Carbon Calculator, an open-access, evidence-based tool designed to help customers understand and reduce the environmental impact of clinical trials
- Our support as a My Green Lab® Accelerator Partner to help customers improve lab sustainability and achieve certification
- Our Fisher Scientific™ Greener Choice and Trusted Sustainability Partner programs, enabling customers to identify environmentally preferable products and suppliers

Lower-impact packaging and transport
Solutions to reduce the environmental impact of packaging and transporting goods to our customers, such as:
- Using sustainable aviation fuel to ship sample collection kits for clinical trials while maintaining sample quality, chain of custody, and shipping speed
- Providing ambient shipping for many of our InvitrogenTM antibodies via padded recyclable envelopes—eliminating the need for ice packs and coolers without affecting product quality or stability

Greener chemicals and reagents
Solutions aligned with the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry to reduce impact on humans and the environment

More circular solutions
Solutions that advance circularity by extending product life and enabling responsible end-of-use recycling to reduce waste and conserve resources

Delivering credible product transparency
Customers are increasingly seeking comparable, third-party-certified information to integrate more sustainable practices into their purchasing decisions. At Thermo Fisher, we prioritize transparency that enables our customers to make informed choices regarding the environmental impact of the products they select. To support this, we are aligning our approach with industry standards, emphasizing the use of third-party ecolabels and disclosing product carbon footprints.
Greener product labels
Through our Greener by designTM program, we have created an easy identification system with our green leaf symbol. When you see the green leaf symbol on one of our products, it means that product has received one or more eligible third-party ecolabels.
At the end of 2025, Thermo Fisher had over 1,600 Greener by designTM products.

Third-party ecolabels
We monitor voluntary product certifications that are issued and verified by independent third-party organizations. After assessing available ecolabels against several criteria including customer expectations, Thermo Fisher has accepted the following ecolabels for use with our products:
- My Green Lab® ACT® Ecolabel
- International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS
- US EPA ENERGY STAR®
- China Energy Label
- Forest Stewardship Council (FSCTM)
- United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Certified BiobasedTM (BioPreferred)

Product carbon footprint
Our large and complex product portfolio requires a scalable approach to developing product carbon footprints (PCFs) that meet customer expectations.
In 2025, we introduced a PCF system aligned with leading global best practices for product greenhouse gas accounting,¹ and, at the end of the year, had generated PCFs for more than 80,000 products.
In 2026, we obtained third-party validation of our system methodology and, as of June 2026, have generated more than 250,000 PCFs.

Designing for sustainability
We are incorporating life cycle thinking in product development. Tools such as life cycle assessment (LCA) help inform design decisions and reduce environmental impacts to support a shift toward a more circular economy, where waste can be minimized and materials kept in use as products, components or raw materials.

Endnote:
- Partnership for Carbon Transparency (PACT) v3.0 Methodology, ISO 14067:2018, and the GHG Protocol Product Standard
